My Inspiration:
Love is Art was inspired by a song I heard about a month ago. I found the song "I Hear a Symphony" by Cody Fry and something in me clicked. I had felt a way I hadn't in a long time. I was also talking to a friend at the time who listened to this song a lot. I had the fabulous idea that I would write a song with an orchestra like in I Hear a Symphony for my friend. But, make it my own of course! The idea of this song is that love comes from art. It is something amazing and unique every time. I'll explain in greater detail each verse and lyric below.
WHEN:
I started writing this song about a month ago and it took me a week to complete
WHO:
I wrote this song for an awesome friend of mine!!
WHY:
I wanted to create something with beauty, love, art, creativity and something to show my gratitude for my friend
LENGTH:
Overall, the process of writing the song, editing the music video, getting it mastered took about a month and a half, maybe less
SONG CREDITS:
Arranged, composed, and written by Faith Jeannette
Inspiration: I Hear a Symphony by Cody Fry
Song was written for none other than my amazing friend!
Mixed by Faith Jeannette and Brandon Rose
Mastered by Brandon Rose
About the song: technical aspect:
I wanted to create a melody that flowed freely and smoothly like in Cody's song
I found a progression as I was writing the song going back and forth between Bb6 and F6 and I really liked the sound of it. The minor tone of a G minor chord over a 3rd in the Bb6 chord felt grand but not too much. I used this progression for the main verses and I used the progression between D add 9 and G in my final chorus.
I listened back and forth a lot between my song and his to figure out how I wanted to construct the piano part. I wanted the piano to be moving a lot but to not overdo it. I think the simple gentle melody in the vocals fits well with the more expressive part in the piano and strings.
I chose carefully in what instruments I wanted to use. I found a nice string sound and used that for the high and low violin sections. I also had a second high violin part.
I wanted to have more parts for the saxophone but I decided to put the focus on violin and piano. I just used an alto saxophone sound from pro tools
I used the flute during the middle and end sections. The flute was used more as a fast repetitive intense sound then more flowing and emotional in the end.
For lower end, I used the french horn and tuba
Did you catch my very short key change??? It was a pretty dramatic change from Bb to Cmaj7 to Abmaj7 back to Bb. I used Cmaj7 as a pivot chord to go into Abmaj then I used F6 to pivot back into the key of Bb(:
During the second interlude/buildup, I changed keys again, obviously. I used F as a pivot chord again. I went from F6 - Eb - Ab - A! I don't typically change keys for an entire chorus in my songs so you can thank Cody for inspiring me to do so! I knew I had to bring the key up and bring the melody higher to give it that perfect climax. Especially all the way from Bb - A. Almost an entire octave up in the key and a 5th up for the vocals.
And to end, I copied him doing just the piano and vocals in the original key, which is something I do in most of my songs anyway.
About the song: lyrics
This is my breakdown of the lyrics I wrote for my friend, I thought I'd show you guys also(:
Verse 1: Okay sooooo I started verse 1 thinking about what makes art, art? Then I had the idea that art is in everything from the little things we do daily to the grand scheme of things. I was also thinking about the pulse in a song and how the beauty of it can pull you inside of it. To me, that is art.
Oh darling can you hear?
The steady Pulse that pulls you near
The love the hope and the tears
Oh Art is everything my dear
Verse 2: In this verse, I wanted to focus more on our friendship and what I think of you. I know, I am a little cheesy. But honestly, it is really the little things that mean a great lot to me.
Did you know how fond I am
It’s the little things that matter in the end
Did you know how I believe in you
Its who you are that separates from the few
Verse 3: In the final verse/chorus, I wanted to go back to the idea of art. I think in a way, our friendship is a beautiful art. It is something that we are able to contribute creativeness, express our ideas, emotions, our thoughts. It is the fun, serious, and deep times that make art special!
Oh darling can you hear?
The steady pulse that pulls you near
It’s what I love and knew from the start
You are wonderful and everything is art
It’s what I love and knew from the start
You are wonderful and love is art
What would I change?
Maybeeeee make the song a little longer. Typically I write lengthy songs around 4-5 minutes. This is my shortest song, only a little over 2 minutes. My idea of making it longer would be to allow my friend to add a really cool sax solo. If I ever get the chance to perform with him, maybe he can play a sax solo live!!
Any struggles????
Making it perfect!! Well, in all seriousness, my main struggle I guess would be configuring the piano part. I wrote a piano part for the whole song and I ended up changing a lot of it when I recorded. It was really hard writing a part because I wanted to be as free and as expressive as possible. I might play it slightly different every single time....
When I started mixing it my biggest struggle was making it sound as emotional and big as in I Hear a Symphony. Luckily, my friend Brandon took care of that in the mastering stage and I focused on the overall levels and EQ of each individual track in the mixing stage
My only "struggle" now is making sure every song has the best quality as this one for now on!
My favorite part of the song:
uhhhhh all of it?!?!?! Wow, cocky much am I right? Okay, this is my favorite song I have written and I say that a lot. Maybe one day I will write a new one that will be my new favorite, but that is the goal. Make better and better music!!! A big reason this is my favorite song I have written and produced is A) The quality is amazing B) this song came from my heart and is special to me. also C) I love composing orchestral parts!!! It is a lot of fun.
I think my favorite part is the 2nd verse. What I love is the small build of introducing new instruments and letting the orchestra start to come out. I also love my short modulation and the lyrics are my fav out of all the other lyrics.
Where can you hear the song and what production elements are for it????
